Booking choice: The classic speedboat and catamaran day. Book this Tour details
Saona tours run all year, but winter is when most people go. The weather is drier, the hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe are full, and more guests means more boats at the natural pool and more towels on the main beach.
This post covers the 2026-27 season: when it starts, which dates to book early, what the cruise calendar at La Romana looks like, and how much notice to give the operators.
The quick answer
High season on Saona runs from December to April, and the Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on 30 November. Christmas to New Year, mid February to March and Holy Week (Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027) are the busiest stretches. Go on a weekday if you can, and book peak dates one to three weeks ahead. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes an early booking low-risk.
When is high season for Saona Island tours in 2026-27?
December to April. These are the driest months on the coast around Punta Cana, and the months when most visitors fly in.
The climate figures most people use for Saona are Punta Cana's, from the resort coast where most guests start their day. Weather2Travel describes the area as hot and tropical "with a winter dry season". February and March are the driest months, with about 53 to 56 mm of rain each, against 142 mm in October.
Dry does not mean rainless. Even in January there is some rain on about half the days. The sea stays warm all winter, at about 26°C (79°F), roughly three degrees cooler than in September and October and still easy to stand in for 40 minutes at the natural pool.
| Month | Day high | Sea | Days with some rain | Rainfall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 30°C (86°F) | 28°C (82°F) | 16 | 119 mm |
| December | 29°C (84°F) | 27°C (81°F) | 17 | 89 mm |
| January | 28°C (82°F) | 26°C (79°F) | 16 | 66 mm |
| February | 28°C (82°F) | 26°C (79°F) | 12 | 56 mm |
| March | 29°C (84°F) | 26°C (79°F) | 12 | 53 mm |
| April | 30°C (86°F) | 26°C (79°F) | 11 | 74 mm |
| May | 30°C (86°F) | 27°C (81°F) | 13 | 132 mm |
Is hurricane season over by December in the Dominican Republic?
Yes. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, and NOAA expected a below-normal season in 2026.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says the season "officially runs from June 1st through November 30th". Its updated outlook of 6 August 2026 put the chance of a below-normal season at 75%, with 7 to 13 named storms and 2 to 6 hurricanes across the whole Atlantic.
Storms do not read calendars, and wind can stir up the sea on any day of the year. For a Saona trip the sea matters more than the rain. Operators may switch the boat or change the order of stops when it is rough, and a storm warning can cancel the trip, with a refund or a new date. Put your Saona day early in your holiday so a lost day can move.

Which dates are busiest on Saona this winter?
Christmas to New Year, mid February to the end of March, and Holy Week. Dominican public holidays add local visitors on top.
Three waves reach Bayahibe each winter. The holiday fortnight from about 20 December to 3 January comes first. North American winter and spring breaks fill February and March. Then comes Semana Santa, Holy Week, a classic beach week for Dominican families: in 2027 Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Sunday 28 March.
Fixed holidays count too. New Year's Day is a Friday, Altagracia Day on 21 January is a Thursday, and Independence Day on 27 February falls on a Saturday in 2027. The gap between New Year and mid February is the quiet pocket of the season, and our pick for room on the sand.
| Dates | What is on | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 19 December 2026 | Season starting, schools still in | Good window, fair crowds |
| 20 December to 3 January | Christmas and New Year | Book as soon as your dates are set |
| 4 January to mid February | Quieter after the holidays | Our pick for space |
| Mid February to 20 March | Winter and spring breaks; lobster ban from 1 March | Busy, book ahead |
| 21 to 28 March 2027 | Holy Week | Avoid Thursday and Friday if you can |
| April 2027 | Season tails off | Calmer, still dry |
Staying in Bayahibe or Dominicus? The small-group catamaran sails from there, with no loud music on the way home.
Book thisIs Saona less crowded on weekdays?
Usually. Weekends add Dominican families to the tour crowd, so a midweek date gives you more room.
Tour boats run every day, and the big group tours share the same long stretch of beach on the south-west coast whatever the day. Weekends add local families on top. If your dates allow it, pick a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Some tours run the day in a different order to stay out of step with the crowd. The Saona VIP four-beach tour runs the classic route in reverse, and the beaches and natural pool speedboat tour also saves the pool for last. For a smaller group, the small group of 20 caps numbers and gives you about four hours on a beach with reserved loungers.

At most 20 guests, a speedboat both ways and about four hours on a beach with reserved loungers. A good fit for the peak weeks.
Book this Tour detailsDo cruise ships at La Romana make Saona busier?
They can. An MSC ship homeports in La Romana every week from 16 November 2026, and cruise-port tours to Saona run on ship days.
In January 2026 Dominican Today reported that MSC Opera will be based in La Romana all year, with weekly seven-night cruises from 16 November 2026 and Catalina Island on the itinerary. Other lines call too. The schedule site Gangwaze lists MSC Opera at La Romana on the Mondays of January 2027, and Costa Fascinosa on Sunday 17 and Sunday 24 January.
Not every cruise guest heads for Saona, and a homeport day is mostly about people boarding and leaving. Port days can still add guests to some Saona boats. If your dates are flexible, check the La Romana schedule for your week and pick a day without a ship.
Coming off a ship yourself? The Saona Crusoe cruise-port day meets at the La Romana cruise port and asks for your ship's name when you book. It visits Mano Juan village and its turtle project, Canto de la Playa and the natural pool.

How far ahead should you book a Saona tour in high season?
One to two weeks for most winter dates, and as soon as you can for Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. Small-group and private boats go first.
The big group tours run several boats. Smaller formats have a hard limit: the small group of 20 stops at 20 guests, the VIP four-beach day at 35, and the private speedboat is one boat for one group. Those are the ones to lock in first.
Every tour on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs nothing if your plans change. Two more winter details. Lobster upgrades stop on 1 March because of the closed season, and our lobster ban post has the dates. The 2026 seaweed peak was in summer, as our sargassum update explains. Prices and what they include are in the Saona price guide.

When is the best time to visit Saona Island?
December to April, for the driest weather and the calmest seas. Early January to mid February and April are quieter than the holiday weeks and March.
Does hurricane season affect Saona trips in December?
The official Atlantic season ends on 30 November. Rough seas can still change a route on any day of the year, and every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Is Saona busy at Christmas?
Yes. The fortnight around Christmas and New Year is one of the busiest of the year. Book as soon as your dates are set, and pick a weekday.
Can I get lobster on a Saona tour in March?
No. The Dominican lobster closed season runs from 1 March to 30 June, and the tours here that sell a lobster upgrade say it is not available from 1 March.
