Is Saona worth it?

Saona is the Dominican Republic's most sold day trip, and the photos are real. The long bus ride and the busy beach are real too. Here is the honest version.

Yes, for most people, with a caveat. The water at the natural pool is as clear as the adverts promise, and the beaches are long, white and lined with palms. The catch is time: from a Punta Cana hotel the day runs 8 to 10 hours, and about 3 of them are on the island.

This guide covers why Saona is famous, the film stories people repeat, what you actually do there, and who would be happier on a different trip.

The quick answer

Saona is worth it if you want the classic Caribbean beach day and accept a long day with crowds. It is famous for the 1980s Bounty chocolate adverts and as the most visited protected area in the country. Skip it if you hate long bus rides or party boats, are pregnant or have back problems, or care more about snorkelling than beaches.

Is Saona Island worth it?

Yes, if you go in knowing the day is long and the main beach is busy. The sea, the sandbar and the palms live up to the pictures.

Here is the trade, laid out:

What you getWhat it costs you
Waist-deep turquoise water at the natural poolAbout 1 to 1.5 hours by road each way from Punta Cana
Long palm beaches in a national parkA crowded stretch of sand on the classic tours
Lunch, drinks and a catamaran ride includedAbout 3 hours on the island out of an 8 to 10-hour day
Starfish, pelicans and, on some tours, mangrovesVendors on the main beach, and an early pickup

The day suits people who come for the beach and the boat party. It disappoints people who expect a deserted island. Choose the tour with that in mind: the best excursion guide sorts them by traveller.

Why is Saona Island famous?

For its postcard beaches, the 1980s Bounty chocolate adverts and the starfish sandbar. It is also the most visited protected area in the Dominican Republic.

The palm-leaning-over-turquoise-water image that sold Bounty bars on British TV in the 1980s was filmed on Saona, and Uncommon Caribbean notes the advert is best remembered by UK viewers. The island sits inside Cotubanamá National Park, which had 808,090 visitors in 2024, the most of any protected area in the country (Dominican Today).

There is history too. The Taíno called it Adamanay; Columbus landed in 1494 and named it after Savona, the Italian home town of his friend Michele da Cuneo (Wikipedia). The Taíno chief Cotubanamá, after whom the park is named, was captured on the island. And Saona is described as the country's most important sea turtle nesting site, with a small sanctuary in Mano Juan.

What movie was filmed at Saona Island?

Saona is best known for the Bounty TV adverts. Parts of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl are said to have been filmed there. The 1980 film The Blue Lagoon was shot in Fiji.

The film stories need care. Wikipedia's Saona page lists Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and The Blue Lagoon among productions filmed in part on the island. The main Pirates set was at Wallilabou Bay on St Vincent, so treat the Saona link as a local story rather than a famous location.

The 1980 Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields was filmed on Nanuya Levu in Fiji. Guides on the boats will tell you otherwise. Enjoy the story; the beach does not need it.

Is Saona the Blue Lagoon island?

No. Blue Lagoon Island is a separate island in the Bahamas, about 5 km from Nassau, and the Blue Lagoon film was shot in Fiji.

Searches mix the two up. Blue Lagoon Island, once called Salt Cay, is a Bahamian island visited from Nassau. Saona is off the south-east coast of the Dominican Republic, reached from Bayahibe. If a Saona tour promises "the Blue Lagoon", it means a lagoon on the island, not the film set.

Saona does have lagoons: Wikipedia lists several in the south of the island and a larger one inland. The private speedboat lists a flamingo lagoon on its route.

What can you do on Saona Island?

Swim at the natural pool, laze on the beach, eat a Dominican buffet, and on some tours snorkel, visit Mano Juan or see the mangroves.

  • The natural pool: a sandbar in open water, waist-deep, with cushion sea stars on the sand. Look; do not lift them.
  • Beach time: about 3 to 4 hours on most group tours, with loungers, a bar and palms for shade.
  • Snorkelling: at the Catuano pier on a few tours. See snorkelling at Saona.
  • Mano Juan: the fishing village and its turtle project, on the cruise-port day and the VIP tour.
  • Wildlife: Wikipedia lists 112 bird species, including brown pelicans, which sit on the posts at Catuano.
  • The catamaran home: music, dancing and rum on the classic tours.

What are the downsides of a Saona trip?

The long day, the crowds on the main beach, the vendors, and the chance of rough sea or seaweed changing your plans.

  • Time: 8 to 10.5 hours from Punta Cana for about 3 to 4 hours on the island. Pickups start early.
  • Crowds: the classic tours land on the same beach, with buffet tents and loungers in rows.
  • Vendors: sellers walk the main beach. A firm "no, gracias" works.
  • The speedboat: it bounces. Most operators exclude pregnant travellers, and several exclude anyone with back problems.
  • Weather and seaweed: rough sea can change the route or cancel the day, and sargassum can reach Caribbean beaches in summer. See the sargassum post.

None of these ruin the day if you pick the right tour. All of them matter if you expected a desert island.

Who should skip Saona?

Pregnant travellers, anyone with back or mobility problems, people who dislike long road trips, and snorkellers who would be happier on a reef.

The listings are clear on health limits: most exclude pregnant travellers, several exclude wheelchair users and people with back problems, and two set an upper age of 70. Ask before you book if you are unsure.

If snorkelling is the point of your day, look at Catalina Island, which has a reef close to the beach. If you are staying far north in Uvero Alto and hate buses, consider a shorter beach day closer to your hotel.

How do you make Saona worth it?

Start from Bayahibe if you can, go on a weekday, pick a tour that names a quieter beach, and leave a spare day for the weather.

  • Start close: staying in Bayahibe or Dominicus cuts 2 to 3 hours of bus.
  • Pick your beach: Canto de la Playa, Mano Juan or a reserved corner beat the main strip. The VIP tour also runs its route in reverse.
  • Sit at the back of the speedboat: the front takes the bumps.
  • Go early in your holiday: if the sea cancels your date, you can rebook.
  • Bring small notes: for tips and a coconut, not for the whole beach.

Canto de la Playa, Mano Juan and the pool last, to stay out of step with the crowd.
